New Patient Information
What To Expect On Your First Visit
Your initial visit will include a detailed oral and periodontal examination and consultation. The appointment will take approximately 45 minutes to one hour depending upon the reason for your visit.
Before beginning any actual treatment Dr. Sheppard will discuss the examination findings with you, the recommended periodontal therapy, and the approximate fees for the treatment you need. Please bring any insurance information you have so, if necessary, we can submit a pre-treatment estimate. We will be happy to provide you with an insurance statement for all services rendered so you can be reimbursed as quickly as possible for your payment to us.
We look forward to meeting you. We will try to make each visit of your treatment sequence as relaxing and pleasant as possible, and to do our best to provide you with high-quality periodontal care. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
For the Apprehensive Patient
Almost all patients who are fearful of the dentist think they are the only ones. I have treated many patients over the course of my career and I can assure you that you are not the only one!
In reality, dental fear is more common than even dentists think. It is estimated that as many as 50% of the U.S. population does not get regular dental care, primarily due to fear. The most common cause of dental fear is a traumatic dental experience at an early age but there are many different causes including fear of gagging, panic disorders, anxiety disorders and what some have called “phobia by association.” Phobia by association happens when one learns to fear something without any direct experience. A common example is developing a fear of the dentist based on the reports of others (true or not). You may not even be certain as to why you are so anxious about the dentist.
I have extensive experience working with apprehensive patients and can assure you that I will take the time to alleviate this concern! If you are apprehensive, we can discuss your apprehension during your first visit and address any concerns you may have when you complete your overall treatment plan.
I have had many patients come to me despite an oftentimes debilitating fear of the dentist. I take special pride in completing a treatment plan with a patient and during the course of treatment also reducing their fear of the dentist. Please let me know as soon as possible if there are any factors that you believe will affect your treatment – we are here to help!
What is Periodontics and what should I expect from my visits to Sheppard Periodontics, S.C.?
First, you should not feel any significant discomfort during your periodontal treatment. We understand that many patients are hesitant about seeing a dentist or have had bad experiences. However, you will be surprised at how easy and comfortable periodontal treatment actually is.
You have probably been referred to this office by your general dentist because the periodontal (gum) problems in your mouth can best be treated by a specialist, a periodontist. Periodontal disease can destroy the bone which supports your teeth. In many cases, this results in too little gum tissue or bone around certain teeth which can cause tooth loss, aesthetic problems, heightened sensitivity, and even bad breath. Our goal is to do everything possible to help you correct and prevent these problems.
Periodontitis is the stage of periodontal disease, more advanced than gingivitis, characterized by bone loss, tooth mobility and destruction of the narrow band of tissue which attaches to the bone. “Perio” means ‘around’; “dontal” means ‘tooth’; “itis” always means ‘inflammation.’ Periodontitis is the inflammation of the tissues around the teeth.
